Teen found guilty of Norwich church hall arson

A 16-year-old boy from Norwich was found guilty of arson at Norwich Youth Court yesterday after a fire gutted a church hall in the city.

The conviction followed an incident of arson on the afternoon of February 17, 2014, which destroyed St Anne’s Church Hall, in Colman Road, to the value of £210,000.

Another boy, a 14-year-old also from Norwich, who cannot be named for legal reasons, also appeared at Norwich Youth Court charged in connection with the incident. He was found not guilty of arson.

PC Dan Taylor, from Earlham Police Station, welcomed the result saying: "This is an extremely safe place to live so this incident really shocked the local community last year.

"It devastated so many people as the venue was a hub of activity for local groups to meet and within a few months of a new kitchen being fitted, it was cruelly destroyed.

"This incident caused hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage and it is pleasing to bring the person responsible to justice.”

The 16-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is due to be sentenced on June 23 at Norwich Youth Court.
