New chief for Norwich Historic Churches

RoryQuinnMarketNorwich Historic Churches Trust has appointed a new chairman as Colin Pordham steps down.

Rory Quinn, a former Lord Mayor, has taken on the role of looking after 18 redundant churches from the Church of England within Norwich.

Over the last 25 years the Trust has spent over £1m in repairs to the churches with around £70,000 generated per year from letting fees.

“It’s a well-know fact that Norwich has the most medieval churches of any city in western Europe,” said Rory. “There used to be a church for every Sunday and a pub for every day of the week.

“Unfortunately things like bombing in particular reduced the number of churches from over 60 to 31 today.”

There are 16 members of the NHCT including two architects, a lawyer and an expert in medieval history.

Redundant Norwich churches have been turned to a number of different uses:
St Michael at Plea, Redwell St is now the SPCK bookshop and Forget-Me-Not-Café
St Peter Parmentergate in King Street is used by the Magdalen Project.
St Edmunds in Fishergate is used by the Norwich Pregnancy Crisis Centre
St Michael Coslany, Colegate is now the Inspire Discovery Centre
St James’, Barrack Street is home to Norwich Puppet Theatre
St Swithin’s, St Benedict’s Street is now the Norwich Arts Centre
St Martin at Palace, Palace Plain is used by the Norfolk Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders.
