Christian football league to kick start in N Norfolk

NNorfolkfootball1CFA Christian youth football league is starting up at the North Norfolk coast with the next free taster session planned for December 6 at Blakeney.

The Children, Youth & Family Missioner for the Church of England, Simon Fenn, has teamed up with Tim Stapleford from the Norfolk Christian Football League (NCFL) to host a number of free taster sessions to kick-start a Christian youth football league across North Norfolk.

The first Saturday in November saw the village hall at Blakeney host the first free taster session.  The morning was supervised by Tim Stapleford and some of his co-workers at the Jenny Lind Park football project in Norwich.  Volunteers from the local church, St Nicholas, provided a warm welcome and refreshments for all.   The morning was action-packed with four teams playing against each other in 6 minute matches.  The hall was alive with energy and enthusiasm as the teams battled for a place in the final, cheered on by encouraging parents and friends.  Simon Fenn commitment, “I was really pleased to see some familiar faces and the young people enjoying a fun but competitive game of football.  I was particularly impressed by the way teams worked and played together.”

The NCFL uses the love of football to promote the Christian faith in a positive way, make the gospel accessible to all and build bridges between the church and the wider community.  In partnership with local communities they organise 7-a-side leagues for local based teams for Under 10s, Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 16s.  They also have an adult 11-a-side league for church-based teams.  Matches take place on Saturday mornings between September and May (9am+) at venues throughout Norwich and Norfolk.

Tim Stapleford said, “I hope that these taster sessions will kick-start the beginnings of a Christian football league along the North Norfolk coast.  We are specifically targeting initial work with the Pilgrim Federation of Church of England schools (Walsingham, Blakeney, Hindringham and Kelling) but also welcome young people from the Langham and Holt primary schools.”

The next U10 taster session will be on Saturday 6th December at Blakeney Village Hall (10:00am-12:00pm) for boys and girl of all abilities.  Children are to be accompanied by a responsible adult and the session is aimed at junior school children in Year 5 and below.  Teams will be organised in accordance with FA regulations on the day.

Simon said “I’m delighted that the morning went so well and we can offer another session in December.  I am always on the lookout for volunteers to support such initiatives; in particular I need some willing parents to act as team managers next month.  If this is you, I would love to hear from you, and I look forward to seeing more people joining us in December.”
