Norwich church remembers plane crash victims

StThomasHalternVisit450A Norwich church with strong links to the German town of Haltern, has remembered the 18 people from the town killed in the Germanwings plane crash.

St Thomas church on Earlham Road in Norwich has had a partnership with the Erlöserkirche church in Haltern in Germany since 1991.

The deaths of 16 pupils and two teachers from the Joseph-König Gymnasium high school last week has devastated the small town.

Last Sunday morning St Thomas held a minute’s silence and at the evening service members of the congregation lit candles in memory of those who lost their lives.

Vicar, the Rev Ian Dyble, told the EDP that all those affected by the air disaster would be kept in the thoughts of his 400-strong congregation. “We are standing with them in their grief,” he said. “What happened is truly shocking. We were concerned first of all for the people tragically affected.

“As far as we know no one in the church has lost anyone directly, but they certainly know some of the people who have died.

“We have prayed for all of those who have been tragically affected and for our friends in the church in Haltern, that they would be able to help and support anyone in their town.”

The group was on its way home from a student exchange in Spain when Germanwings Flight 9525 crashed in the French Alps.
