North Norwich church-based choir showcase new music

On March 3, the Cantamus Community Choir based at St Margaret’s Church in Thorpe Market will perform two concerts representing Norfolk in the national Festival of Contemporary Music for All supported by the Arts Council.

On Saturday, March 3, the Cantamus choir will perform a teatime concert at West Runton Church and an evening concert at Thorpe Market Church as part of the national Contemporary Music for All Festival supported by the Arts Council - the only festival event planned in Norfolk.

Dr. Katayoun Dowlatshahi of St Margaret's said: "Cantamus began as a community choir at St Margaret’s Church in Thorpe Market, part of a strong musical tradition that has flourished in the church for a number of years.  Under the current Musical Directorship of Philip Adams the choir has successfully been expanding its repertoire and scope."

Four exciting new pieces by Norfolk Composers Pat Hanchet, Colin Blundell, Martyn Craft, and David Morgan, will be performed by the acclaimed London-based new music ensemble Ixion. The concert will be conducted by Sheringham-based Michael Finnissy with organ accompaniment by Philip Adams.

Two of the four works are based on a chorus from Handel's ‘Messiah’, and two on a chorus from Stainer’s ‘Crucifixion’. There will also be two short solo instrumental pieces by Andrew Toovey and Greg Rose, and a setting of William Blake by Michael Finnissy.

Thorpe Market church is a venue well known for its support of the arts.  It has excellent acoustics and has invested in facilities to stage performances and exhibitions.

Tickets for the concert are £8 on the door. For further information about joining the choir or attending the concert please email cantamussingers@gmail.com.

Teatime concert at 3pm, The Parish Church of Holy Trinity Runton, Cromer Road, West Runton, NR27 9QT
