New Job Club course starts at Norwich’s Surrey Chapel

Surrey Chapel’s CAP Job Club is starting a new ‘Steps to Employment’ course this week; an 8-week free course with homemade cake that the Norwich church has found makes a remarkable difference in the lives of those taking part.

On Tuesday, June 4, 11am-2pm Surrey Chapel’s CAP (Christians Against Poverty) Job Club is starting an 8-week course called 'Steps to Employment'.

Dawn Arden (pictured), the Job Club Manager for Surrey Chapel, said: “During the course we look at motivation, identifying any obstacles towards getting a job, then strategies to overcome them and identifying our own personal skills so we can build a really powerful CV. We look at what the employer wants and of course interviews. We are all very friendly and approachable. All sessions include a free lunch and of course lots of home-made cake!”

Surrey Chapel, near Norwich's Anglia Square, recently held a special service where clients of the church's CAP Job Club and Debt Centre came to celebrate the difference CAP has made in their lives. Dawn said: “Clients gave testimony to how they had been freed from debt and found jobs through the help and support of the local centre.".

Dawn and her team have witnessed some remarkable success stories over the last couple of years of running the 'Steps to Employment' course. One client was instrumental in two other clients finding work, by putting their names forward to her employer, when she was offered employment. Dawn said: “It is really encouraging to see Job Club members supporting each other.”

Another client said: “I would like to thank you and the team for the job club on Tuesday mornings, with practical advice, a sympathetic ear when things hadn't gone as well as hoped, and a chance to socialise in an often lonely week.”

Following the 8-week course, the Job Club is open every Tuesday 11am to 2pm for drop–in sessions where the clients build on what they have learned in the course and put it into practice.

There is a warm welcome to all. All of CAP's services are completely free and available to all regardless of faith, age, gender, race, disability or sexual orientation.

You are welcome to start attending the Steps to Employment course on Tuesday, June 4 or Tuesday, June 11 at 11am-2pm. There is no need to book.

Do you appreciate our service and stories?

The Network Norwich & Norfolk website has been published for over 13 years now and we have an established team of professional journalists covering the activities, organisations and churches which make up the county’s Christian community. Our whole purpose is to support that community by daily providing accurate, unbiased stories and features.

To pay for that service, we rely on our partner organisations, advertisers and readers to, in turn, support us financially. We want to keep the website free for everyone to access and continue to be able to pay for writers to produce the content you can enjoy every day.

We would like to ask you to consider supporting our work and suggest you might want to make a small regular donation of just £1 a week and become one of our 100 Friends, or a larger one-off or annual amount.

Because we are part of a registered charity we can reclaim Gift Aid on your donations if you are a tax-payer.
