Restoration of Upper Sheringham church bells starts

The six bells from All Saints Church in Upper Sheringham in North Norfolk have been sent to Dorset for restoration work. Tony Rothe reports.

When they arrive at the bell works, they will have restoration work undertaken, and a new frame with fixtures and fittings will be made ready for their return later in the year. The work is being undertaken by Nicholson Engineering in Bridport, Dorset.

upper sheringham bell 500ATSue Morton, project co-ordinator of the Bell Appeal, said “We have had a very exciting week here – many cars and villagers (and a group of children from the local primary school) were stopped in their tracks when they saw a sight many folk never see and certainly only once in a lifetime – the 6 bells from being loaded onto a lorry to start their journey to the bell works. We are immensely grateful to those who have supported this project either financially or with giving up their time and expertise.”

The project has so far raised around £63,000 of the £80,000 required through a mixture of grants, fundraising events and personal donations, with more fund-raising events planned for this autumn.

There will be a fun variety show “Upper Sheringham’s Got Talent” (no judging, just for fun!) taking place in the Church at 7pm on Saturday September 7, with a wide variety of acts including organists, handbells, singers, readings and more.  Tickets are £12 in advance or £15 on the door (light refreshments will be served in the interval).  Tickets available from Sue Morton (01263 826078 or suejmorton@gmail.com)

Sue has also organised a grand draw to be drawn at the end of the year.  Tickets are £1 each or £5 for a book. The many prizes include two National Trust family day passes, a round of golf for 4 at Sheringham Golf Club and a Sandringham Teddy Bear.  Contact Sue (details above) for tickets.

Donations to the appeal can be made on line via www.gofundme.com/upper-sheringham-bell-appeal or by cheque (payable to Upper Sheringham PCC) to Sue Morton, 4 Linden Grove, Sheringham, NR26 8PD
