Norwich Cathedral to launch new children’s choir
Children who love to sing have the chance to join a brand new choir at Norwich Cathedral.
The Norwich Cathedral Children’s Choir is open to children aged six to 11 and those who join before Saturday 30 November will have the chance to sing at the Cathedral’s Christmas Eve Crib Service.
The new choir – which will have a fun weekly rehearsal on Saturday mornings – is an informal addition to the Cathedral’s musical life which also includes the Norwich Cathedral Choir, made up of boy and girl choristers, lay clerks and choral scholars, and the Norwich Cathedral Chamber Choir, made up of experienced adult amateur singers.
Ashley Grote, the Cathedral’s Master of Music, said: “We are really excited to be launching the Norwich Cathedral Children’s Choir. It is a great opportunity for children who love to sing to simply have fun with music and to enjoy the unique experience of taking part in special events at Norwich Cathedral. There is no audition to join the choir and no experience is necessary – the only pre-requisite is a love of singing!
“We are really looking forward to the Children’s Choir singers making their debut this Christmas at the Cathedral’s Christmas Eve Crib Service. It’s a wonderful way to the launch the choir and we hope lots of children will sign-up for rehearsals and join us for this very special occasion!”
Rehearsals will be led by Posy Walton, Norwich School’s head of vocal studies, and will take place in the Cathedral’s Song School on Saturday mornings from 9.15am until 10.15am during term time. The first rehearsal will be on November 23 and in the run-up to Christmas there will also be rehearsals on November 30 and December 7 and 14.
The choir’s first public performance will be at the Christmas Eve Crib Service at midday. Always a popular event in the Cathedral’s Christmas programme, this is an informal service where the Nativity story is brought to life and children are encouraged to dress as characters from the Nativity. Throughout the year the Children’s Choir will also perform at other special occasions including potentially at Harvest Festival and at the At the Foot of the Cross service on Good Friday.
The choir is open to boys and girls aged six to 11. There is no subscription or fee to join the choir, but parents will be asked to buy branded polo shirts for their children to wear during performances.
Children who join the choir before Saturday 30 November will be able to sing at the Cathedral's Christmas Eve Crib Service. There will also be opportunities for children to join the choir from January.
