New book to enable and empower personal prayer

A journal to aid, enable and empower personal daily prayer has just been published by former Norwich church leader, and now Celebrate Norfolk project director, John Betts.

ForumJohnBettsAs a small boy I was first taught to pray by my mother. At a time when I suffered regular nightmares I learned from her to pray the prayer book prayer “Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all the perils of the night; for the love of thy Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.” I was always able to get a peaceful night’s sleep after that.

Before I was a Christian I prayed and read the Bible, even as a young soldier during my period of National Service. At 20 years old I was born again and began to pray as a believer kneeling at my bedside in the army barrack room.

Over my 60 plus years as a believer I have endeavoured to be a praying Christian. Sometimes with success and at other times not so successfully. As a church leader I understood that to fulfil my role I needed to pray. Ministry without prayer soon becomes “sounding brass and a clanging cymbal.”

There are many good books on the market to teach God’s people to pray and I would not detract from any of them. However for me the best source of instruction on prayer is God’s word. In Luke’s gospel we meet “The Son of Man” and it is recorded by Luke, seven times, “Jesus prayed.” If the ideal man needed to pray then I surely need to learn from Him how to pray. In Matthew 6 Jesus taught His disciples, “This, then, is how you should pray.”

“Daily Prayer, A journal” is designed to be an aid to enable and empower ones daily prayer life. It is based on the Lord’s Prayer, a framework around which to build one’s own daily prayer. You, your background experience and present walk with the Lord gives the variety. As a model, this prayer is totally flexible and as fresh as each new day, just awaiting you and the anointing of the Holy Spirit.

I have prayed this way and taught the use of the Lord’s Prayer in this format over many years seeking to encourage God’s people to go deeper with the Lord in their prayer life. Praying as Jesus taught us to brings great confidence to the believer and assurance in our relationship to the Lord. I am available to conduct seminars to teach people how to use the Journal and pray this way.

Book reviews

‘Now that I have John Betts’ beautifully produced Prayer Manual, I wonder how I ever did without it! How good to be reminded who/what to pray for; also to be reminded of past answers to payer. I strongly recommend it.’
John Wright, International Director, The Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship International.

A daily prayer journal is great for new Christians particularly as it gives them the openings into the whole areas of prayer and how God hears us and brings heaven to earth. It's also good for those who need a fresh inspiration in their prayer life or just want to pray in a different way than they have before. It's good to be organised to a degree that sets up your day and yet leaves space and opportunity for God's surprises, confirmations, declarations and silences.
Rev. Ray Scorey National Director for Healing Rooms Scotland and Regional Director for Southeast England
