All systems go at Norwich Youth for Christ

Latest developments at Norwich Youth for Christ include a new Education Manager, the Encounter summer camp, gaming ministry and an appeal for hosts.

Tania Colley has become the newest staff member at Norwich Youth for Christ. She worships at Surrey Chapel and has taken on the role of Education Manager, overseeing the education project Boost.

Numbers have been low at the project most of this year, but the team has been working consistently with two students who are struggling with school. One struggles with crippling anxiety, so much so that he is not able to attend school and has a home tutor alongside a day with Youth for Christ. Working with the tutor’s plans, the team has dovetailed his GCSE music and catering work into his time with the charity. Mum told them: “This place is amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a better place one.” Meanwhile, the second student, whose needs mean he needs a long-term specialist school (possibly out of the county), told the team that: “I’m my happiest when I’m here.”

The Encounter summer camp, which is being run in partnership with other Youth for Christ centres in Norfolk, is going ahead again this year and bookings are strong. The camp will run between August 28  and September 1 and will include games, activities, sports and worship alongside guest speaker, Matt Ashpole, from Identity project in Gorleston. Last year the camp took around 20 young people but double that figure is expected this year. There are still places and you can book on integrateyfc.org.uk/camp

The Gaming ministry has recently reached over 100 followers on the Twitch channel. There have been continuing faith conversations and several young people have now joined from school clubs. In April the charity run a sponsored Gameathon with 24 hours of gaming and live streaming, raising an impressive £1867 with 13 young people joining. For some of them, it was the first time they had come to one of the community projects.

Finally, the team is still looking for host homes for volunteers in September. These are young people aged 18-20 who will complete a gap year, serving in Youth for Christ projects and telling young people about Jesus whilst completing their training with Youth for Christ. Because they come from other parts of the country, the team needs places for them to stay. Unfortunately, in recent years, it has been a struggle to find hosts. Please contact Nick Blanch at nblanch@norwichyfc.co.uk if you are able to help.
