Sheringham BeachLife outreach about to launch

Final preparations are being made for the launch of BeachLife on Sheringham clifftops and beach immediately after the late summer bank holiday, and any children and young people are welcome to come along. Tony Rothe reports.

The BeachLife outreach comprises four days of free activities for families and young people from Tuesday 30 August through to Friday 2 September. The fun starts at 10.30am each day (except Friday) at the marquee on the Leas in Sheringham. Registration is from 10.15am. All ages are catered for, from toddlers to late teens. There is no charge for any of the activities.
 
Each day will start with the Beach Special, which will include songs, challenges, drama, the medley, and even a gunge tank! The children and young people will then split into their age groups for the Going Deeper sessions, where that day’s theme will be explored in fun and creative ways.
 
The family events in the afternoons will include a treasure trail from 2pm on the Tuesday, followed by a putting contest at the Beeston Hill putting green from 4.30pm. Wednesday has beach sports from 3.30pm followed by the tide fight from 5pm, with chips. Families are back on the beach from 3.30pm on the Thursday for sand sculptures, followed by swimming at the Reef from 7.30pm. Friday morning will start with Going Deeper from 10.30pm, followed by the Beach Special on the Leas from 12 noon, which will include brunch.   
 
Sheringham BeachLife is organised and run by the churches in the town primarily for the benefit of young people in Sheringham and the surrounding areas. It was formed in 2012 with the team of over 50 DBS-checked volunteers coming from the different churches.
 
Peter Skivington, planning group leader, said “It is rewarding to see children come back year after year, and those relationships are further developed by the work the churches do in schools and in children’s and youth clubs throughout the year. BeachLife also attracts a sizeable number of holidaymakers and other visitors, many of whom return each year. There was a non-church family from Hertfordshire whose teenage girls saw the event when walking past to the beach one day and decide to join in. Through hearing about Jesus in the youth group, they became Christians and then connected with a local church back home!”
