Holiday fun for older people at Norfolk churches

A group of Norfolk churches is aiming to ensure that it is not just the young people that are having holiday fun but also those who qualify for a free bus pass.

Gaye Hailstone, an Anna Chaplain with Yare Valley Churches, said: “Last year at Yare Valley, we decided that it was unfair that only the youngsters at church had a fun packed annual Holiday Club week, and so the Anna Chaplaincy Bus Pass Holiday Club was launched.

“Monday August 15 was the first day of our 2022 holiday club and, wow, what a wonderful week we had. There were around 30 of us who got together each morning and started the day with chair aerobics. Then after coffee and posh biscuits there was entertainment such as a sing-a-long, Name that Tune, a table quiz, bingo etc, then time for lunch.

“After that we set off either to the coast for a paddle and walk along the prom at Gorleston, went to Horning for an afternoon cruise, visited the Venetian waterways at Great Yarmouth, Wroxham Barns and, on the last afternoon, we joined together for a lovely Songs of Praise service in church.

“Already people are asking if we will be running this again next year. It catered for the old elderly, the young elderly and those on the dementia pathway, and we who helped also had a fabulous time,” said Gaye.

Anna Chaplaincy is a nationwide initiative which works in partnership with the Bible Reading Fellowship.  Anna Chaplains are named after the widow, Anna, who appears with Simeon in Luke’s Gospel.  Both are good role models of faithful older people.
