Join Gorleston church’s Coronation celebration

A church in Gorleston is inviting its community to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla, by hosting a community fun day at the heart of the Magdalen estate in the town.

St Mary Magdalene Church, supported by community events specialists Freshly Greated and Magdalen Way Methodist Church, will be hosting Summer on the Mag for the Coronation from 1pm to 5pm on Monday 8 May on Magdalen Square in Gorleston.

There will also be a full programme of musical acts performing on a stage outside St Mary Magdalene over the course of the afternoon.

The Rev Matthew Price, Vicar of St Mary Magdalene Church, explained: “Last year we held a very successful Summer on the Mag in celebration of the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and this year we’re back for the King’s Coronation.  Whether you are a royalist or not, we think the Coronation is a brilliant opportunity to get together, have fun and celebrate all that is good about our community.  Once again, we’re delighted to be working with Freshly Greated and Magdalen Way Methodist and also for the support of Great Yarmouth Borough Council, allowing us to hold the event on Magdalen Square.”

The event will be officially opened at 1pm by Lady Agnew, one of the county’s Deputy Lieutenants, and The Bishop of Lynn.  The opening will also feature a special performance of Coronation Day, a new song written especially for the Coronation, by the choir of local primary school, Ormiston Herman Academy.

Attendees will also be able to take part in a special rock-painting activity to mark the Coronation, or bring their dog along to compete in the all-comers just-for-fun dog show, hosted by Pawsitive Partners, with fun categories such as the best dressed dog or the dog the judge would most like to take home. There will also be an opportunity to be a King or Queen today in the Coronation-throne photo booth!

Rev Price continued, “The King has designated Monday 8 May as The Big Help Out, and Summer on the Mag will also be showcasing some of the wonderful organisations that support our community and how people can get involved, if they would like to.

Alongside Summer on the Mag, there will be other opportunities to mark the King’s Coronation at special services at St Mary Magdalene Church. At 7pm on Thursday 4 May prayers will be said for the King and Queen Consort in advance of their Coronation, and on Sunday 7 May at 10.30am the church will host a special celebratory service for all ages.

More details of all that is planned can be found on the Facebook pages of St Mary Magdalene Church, Freshly Greated and Magdalen Way Methodist Church.
