King's promise to ‘serve not be served’ says bishop

King Charles III will promise “not to be served but to serve” during his coronation ceremony on Saturday May 6, says the Bishop of East Anglia the Rt Rev Peter Collins.

Speaking at the Diocese of East Anglia pilgrimage to Walsingham on May 1, Bishop Peter told around 1,000 pilgrims gathered inside and outside the Chapel of Reconciliation at the Catholic National Shrine: “On Saturday the people of our nation, the peoples of the Commonwealth and many others across the world will rejoice to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.

“The King will enter Westminster Abbey in a procession of majestic splendour, but his first action will be a personal proclamation, a declaration of profound humility expressed through the words of Jesus Christ himself.

“The King will address a chorister with the promise – ‘I come not to be served but to serve’.

“During the ceremony his Majesty will hear the call “to be fruitful in every good work”, words taken from St Paul’s letter to the Colossians,” said Bishop Peter.
