Funding boost for Norwich Cathedral

NorwichCathedralNorwich Cathedral has received a significant boost, with the announcement of a £491,000 grant to fund repairs to the building.

The award, which is the largest of 31 made to English Cathedrals from an £8.3 million government sponsored funding pot, was announced by the Culture Secretary, Sajid Javid, on Monday. Restoration work will be carried out to the Cathedral’s north clerestory and the east elevation of the presbytery, to improve the weather resistance of the building’s exterior. It is anticipated that the work will begin in the New Year and be undertaken throughout 2015-16.

The grant is well timed, with events to commemorate the First World War and honour the life of Edith Cavell – whose grave is situated nearby – set to take place at the Cathedral over the coming years.

The Very Revd Jane Hedges, Dean of Norwich, said: “In order to play a full and active role in providing a comprehensive programme of services, events and activities for communities in Norfolk, we need to continue to pay close attention to the upkeep of the Cathedral.

“Today’s news is very welcome and means that important restorative work can now be carried out, whilst allowing us to focus on our wider ministry of welcoming people to the Cathedral for worship, to experience its history and enjoy the wonderful facilities we have to offer.”
