Reed cyclists on road 640CF

Sheringham Christians cycle home from North Wales

2018: A team of cyclists from Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham have just completed a 256 mile cycle ride from Prestatyn in North Wales raising well over £1000 for a school in Uganda. Tony Rothe reports.

The cycle ride was organised by Reed People, a charity based at and supported by the Lighthouse church. They are working with Pastor Stephen Musisi, Director of African Child Development Trust, to improve and develop a primary school in the village of Lumpewe in Uganda.

The second day took them through the Midlands, leaving a 98-mile marathon to complete on the Saturday. They finished the final few miles on Sunday morning, arriving back at Lighthouse in Sheringham at 10.20am to the rapturous applause of the congregation waiting in the car park.

“We know we have already raised well over £1000” explained event organiser Derek Baldry, “but the total is still growing.” Asked why they embarked on such a marathon, Derek said “Quite simply because God told us to!   And it was He who sustained us throughout this trip”

Ian Mutton, one of the riders, said “Leicester Ring Road in the rush hour is not to be recommended, and the hills around Rutland Water were tough going, but God was working through our weakness, and He got us back to Sheringham. We felt a huge sense of achievement”

The youngest rider, Matthew Mutton, who completed an extra two miles on the third day in order to achieve 100 miles that day, said “The best bit was the brilliant teamwork – We all worked together as one team”.

Ingrid Fleetcroft added “And the support team were great too – following with the support vehicle, and making sure we had everything we needed”.

There is much more to do to alleviate overcrowding, and to extend the facilities, with the eventual aim of developing a secondary school with an agricultural training programme.
