Renewal at Julian Centre as new curate is named

In spite of the pandemic, the Julian Centre in Norwich is moving steadily forward with plans to create a renewed centre of prayer, education and hospitality as it prepares for the 650th anniversary of the Shewings in 2023.

All Hallows House, which was faithfully served since the 1960s by the much-loved Sisters of the Community of All Hallows (and, for a time in the 1990s, the Community of the Sacred Passion) is undergoing extensive refurbishment. It has been unable to receive guests since the departure of Sister Pamela CAH to Mull in February 2018.

A flat (with sitting room, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom) will be created for the House Steward, who will be recruited later this year.

Meanwhile, Edwin Wilton-Morgan, who is currently studying at Westcott House in Cambridge, has been named as the new curate at the Julian Centre in Norwich.

He will be serving his curacy at Norwich Cathedral, under the care of the Dean and Chapter, but with a particular ministerial focus on the Julian Campus. He will play a significant role in developing the mission not only to visitors and pilgrims but, just as importantly, to the local area where massive regeneration in recent years offers many opportunities for real engagement and service.

Edwin is currently in his third year of formation at Westcott House, and will, God willing, be ordained Deacon at Norwich Cathedral just before St Peter’s Day this June.

A new charity, the Julian of Norwich Partnership, has been formed which brings together the Friends of Julian of Norwich, Norwich Cathedral, the Parish of Timberhill, the Diocese of Norwich, the Community of All Hallows and other interested parties to shape the life and witness of the site around St Julian’s Church and the Lady Julian’s Cell.

The Partnership will hold the lease for both All Hallows House and the Julian Centre, the Community of All Hallows remaining the landlord. The church and churchyard will continue to be under the oversight of the Parish of Timberhill, which is led by Fr Richard Stanton, the Priest Director.
