Norwich Christian leaders advised to prioritise rest

Leaders of churches and charities gathered for a time of fellowship at King’s Community Church, including a talk from Toby Skipper on the importance of rest.

Last Wednesday Connect Norwich drew more than 20 leaders from churches and Christian charities from across greater Norwich for lunch, companionship and prayer at King’s Community Church. During the meeting attendees also heard from Toby Skipper, lead elder at the church.

Toby emphasised the importance of rest for those in positions of leadership, citing four pieces of evidence: God wants us to rest; we are weak and need to rest; rest is a demonstration of faith; and rest is an act of love towards other people.

Toby explained: “Jesus needed to rest, we need to rest, and beautifully God remembers that we're dust. I think it's important sometimes just to remember where we've come from and where we're going to. God wants you and me to rest and there to be a rhythm of that reflected in our lives. We're made in the image of God.

“Seven days work, no rest is slavery, and that's what the Israelites were rescued out of from Egypt; out of being treated like machines. So God wants us to rest. It's dehumanizing for us, actually, and reduces our humanity when we don't.”

Noel Wood, Pastor at Taverham Evangelical Church was at Connect Norwich for the first time, and commented: “It was really beneficial for me to come here today to Connect Norwich, to meet with other leaders…I want to encourage you, come along, be part of what God’s doing right here, right now in Norwich.” See video below.

Connect Norwich will next meet on 10th July 2024 at YMCA, Aylsham Road.
