Cawston church wins grant funding for urgent repairs
2018: St Agnes’ Church in Cawston has been awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £0.22m which will go a long way towards enabling urgent repairs and improvements to be carried out on the medieval church building.
The HLF grant of £221,800 will provide over 70% of the expected cost of the project which aims to make the premises weatherproof by repairing the high-level leaded windows and introducing a state-of-the-art drainage system to take rainwater away from the building.
The community will also benefit from the creation of a new multi-purpose space. All of this will make the church a much more hospitable place for community events, concerts and meetings as well as regular worship.
“Cawston Parish Church is one of the most magnificent examples of medieval architecture in the country, complete with its internationally significant rood screen and angel-adorned hammerbeam roof. The immense building draws large numbers of visitors from across the world who come to marvel at the architecture and enjoy the peace and serenity of the building” explained Team Vicar Rev’d Andrew Whitehead.
“This project will help to safeguard the building and its art treasures for many years to come. We’re delighted to receive this generous grant from the HLF but our challenge now is to secure the rest of the funds, a total of £92,000, which we’re seeking from other grant making bodies and donations from individuals. As our building is so well loved by the many people who visit from all over the world, we are also launching an online fundraising campaign to see if members of the public will help us. All donations will be appreciated, whether they are large or small.”
Cawston Parish Church is part of the Aylsham and District Team Ministry in the Diocese of Norwich. The church has weekly worship with over 40 regular worshippers. Through the week, it offers a weekly toddler group, monthly Book & Jigsaw swap and a monthly Messy Church designed for families and children.
