Martin Smith's tour kicks off at Waterfront gig

Christian songwriter Martin Smith started his Dancing in the Fire tour in Norwich, with support from Joshua Luke Smith and local musician Sam Loaker.

Helen Baldry reports

The eight-date national tour visits Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds amongst others, as well as Martin Smith's home city of Brighton. The former Delirious frontman was delighted to be in Norwich and playing at the Waterfront to a crowd keen to hear songs from his latest album Dancing in the Fire.

Martin Smith and his band brought energy to the stage and got the crowd involved in worship to his uplifting songs. He said, “Singing is a way out of trouble... it’s a thing that we can do when everything's against us. We can raise our voices and lift or eyes to the hills.”

He performed songs including Trouble, Our eyes are on you and Jesus

At each location a local musician has been invited as a support act. In Norwich Sam Loaker played the opening set, having recently returned to his home city of Norwich from Canada. Despite his own guitar still a shipping container enroute to the UK, he borrowed his uncles’s for a moving set that perfectly complemented the themes of humanness and gratitude that were expressed throughout the evening. Sam said, “It was an honour to play on the same line up as Martin Smith - someone who has faithfully inspired and influenced so many with his music. I played three songs from my latest EP and a couple of new songs written during lockdown. They are honest songs of struggle and joy wrapped up in relatable stories.”
After Sam, touring support act Joshua Luke Smith opened his set with powerful poetry on the theme of good coming even after the darkest nights, before leading into hip hop style songs from his album The Void. He expressed his feeling that as an artist he has a duty to ‘wear his heart on his sleeve’ and express the emotions we commonly experience as these are the things that unite us.

Martin Smith’s well-known songs are frequently sung in churches around Norfolk. They include Did You Feel The Mountains Tremble?, Waiting Here For You, I Could Sing Of Your Love Forever and History Maker. At the Waterfront a diverse multi-generational crowd danced along to his new ones – no doubt some of which will be part of the canon of worship music for many churches worldwide.
