Norwich MP praises church workers' crucial role

In the midst of a busy Friday schedule, Clive Lewis, Labour MP for Norwich South, visited Bowthorpe Church in support of its £70,000 roof appeal to sign-a-tile and add a message in the book of remembrance where names are recorded for posterity, reports Mike Wiltshire.

In the book, Clive wrote: “It’s a real privilege to make a small contribution to this fantastic community hub and church. Although a humanist, I can still see the crucial role this building and the people who worship and work in it make to the local community. To that end, I salute them and wish them and the new roof the very best! – Clive Lewis, MP.”

With a big smile, Clive also wrote on a new tile with a marker pen: “Forwards with Socialism!” Clive Lewis, MP. Xx

Among the varied community activities of Bowthorpe Church is its members' enthusiastic support for dementia friendly communities, particularly the new £19million Care Village, opening soon, just mile from the church.

Visitors from a wide area came to the church over three days to sign-a-tile at the church which is also celebrating its thirtieth anniversary – it stands on an historic site where a church was first established 1,000 years ago.  Adjacent to today’s building is the ruined church and garden of St Michael and All Angels which will be the focal point of a multi-arts festival in September to celebrate the millennial year of the death of St Walstan, Norfolk’s patron saint of agriculture and farm workers.

Clive Lewis fitted in the Bowthorpe visit in between media interviews and a meeting with the Department of Work and Pensions in Norwich. Clive says: “I'm not your typical politician. My life outside of politics has given me experience of the real world.”

For more than a decade he was a BBC TV news reporter becoming the BBC eastern region’s chief political reporter.  He has also been an army reservist infantry officer, serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2009.
