S African Christian charity founder to speak in Norwich
In early July, Barbara Tofaute, the founder of the transformative South African Christian charity, Hope and Light, who was awarded The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for this work, will be sharing her story at Witard Road Baptist Church.
In 2004 Barbara Tofaute (pictured right) established the Christian charity ‘Hope and Light’ to change the lives of the impoverished, shack dwelling people living in the Sir Lowry’s Pass Village in South Africa. The aim was to create a beacon of hope amid this cycle of poverty and violence, starting with the children.
Hope and Light is a charity with strong links to Norwich. Paul and Dianne Cruickshank from Norfolk visited the region in 2005, and have since worked with and supported Hope and Light by registering a UK branch of the Hope and Light charity to raise funds for the work.
On Wednesday, July 5 at 7.30pm Barbara Tofaute, will speak at an open meeting at Witard Road Baptist Church about her journey with Hope and Light and also about her faith in Jesus. She will also speak to a meeting of the Zoe Group, a weekly ladies Bible Study that meets at the church, on Tuesday, July 4.
Dianne Cruickshank said: “We are looking forward to the visit of Barbara Tofaute, founder and leader of Hope and Light in South Africa, to the UK at the beginning of next month to speak of her journey with Hope and Light, and with our Lord Jesus.”
In 2014 Barbara Tofaute was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for this work, the highest tribute the Federal Republic of Germany can pay to individuals for services to the nation.
Hope and Light started with an all-day crèche, and expanded to include a ‘Children’s Village’, where children, who had been suffering abuse, neglect and abandonment could be cared for on a permanent basis. A purpose built primary school is now under construction and the children have moved into the first three classrooms.
Dianne said: “We have now started the second building phase and hope many more school kids will be able to move into the new rooms soon.”
